Black books that were banned

They are books that are considered classics, particularly in America. Written by black authors, these books tell significant stories of survival in the south during slavery, the struggles of black people at the time and their search for identity.

They were thought-provoking literary works, yet, they were banned by school boards and libraries across the United States. Parents protested against these books based on arguments that they contained sexually explicit content, vulgar language and violence.

Some libraries even only allowed students to view some of these books only if they had permission from their parents.

Nevertheless, these books continue to be of interest to many avid readers. The following is a compilation of black books that were banned or challenged right after their publication.
