Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman has been crowned the 2024 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Player of the Year during a star-studded ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco. The Atalanta forward triumphed over stiff competition to claim African football’s highest individual honor.

Lookman, 27, beat out finalists Achraf Hakimi of Morocco, Ivorian Simon Adingra, Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, and South Africa’s Ronwen Williams. His remarkable season for both club and country cemented his reputation as one of the continent’s elite talents.

The Nigerian star played a pivotal role in Atalanta’s historic Europa League triumph, delivering a hat-trick in the final that sealed the Italian club’s maiden European trophy. His clinical finishing and dynamic playmaking made him a standout in European football.

Internationally, Lookman’s contributions to the Super Eagles were just as impactful. He netted three goals during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, guiding Nigeria to a runner-up finish. His efforts earned him further recognition as the only African player shortlisted for the prestigious Ballon d’Or this year, where he placed 14th.

Lookman joins an illustrious list of Nigerian winners of the CAF Player of the Year award, following in the footsteps of last year’s honoree, Victor Osimhen. Speaking at the ceremony, he expressed gratitude for the honor. “This is a dream come true, not just for me but for every Nigerian who supported me along the way,” he said.

Barbra Banda makes history
In the women’s category, Zambia’s Barbra Banda made headlines as she became the first Zambian player to win the CAF Women’s Player of the Year award. Banda’s exceptional performances throughout the year earned her widespread acclaim.

The striker was a standout for Zambia at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she scored four goals, including a stunning hat-trick in a group-stage match against Australia. Banda’s relentless energy and goal-scoring prowess highlighted her as one of the tournament’s most exciting players.

Her club performances were equally impressive. Banda scored 13 goals during the regular season and added four more in the playoffs for Orlando Pride, leading the team to its first-ever National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) title. Her contributions were critical to the team’s success, earning her accolades as one of the best players in women’s football.

Banda dedicated her award to young girls across Africa. “This is for every girl who dreams of playing football at the highest level. If I can achieve this, so can you,” she said.

Celebrating African excellence
The CAF Awards ceremony was a celebration of the best in African football, showcasing the continent’s immense talent on a global stage. The event brought together football legends, dignitaries, and fans to honor players who have excelled both domestically and internationally.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe praised the winners and nominees for their contributions to the sport. “These players have not only made Africa proud but have also inspired millions with their skill, dedication, and passion,” he said.

Lookman and Banda’s victories underscore the continued rise of African footballers in the global arena. Their achievements reflect the growing influence of African talent in shaping the future of the sport.

As the 2024 CAF Player of the Year awards concluded, the spotlight remained firmly on Lookman and Banda, whose remarkable journeys serve as a testament to the power of hard work, resilience, and the enduring spirit of African football.
