Bisi Alimi

Bisi Alimi made history in 2004 when he became the first person to come out as gay on Nigerian national television. He, however, had to flee to the United Kingdom in 2007 after receiving death threats. He was granted asylum in 2009.

A former “Pre and Post Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in Africa” lecturer at the Humboldt University in Berlin, Bisi is currently the Founder and Executive Director of the Bisi Alimi Foundation. The foundation advocates for the social acceptance of the LGBTQ community in his home country.

Bisi graduated from the University of Lagos in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre Arts. He also has an MSc in Global Governance and Public Policy from the Birkbeck College University of London.
