The Wound, South Africa
The Wound is a romantic drama movie created with the intention of unravelling the much-guarded secrets of the traditional African circumcision ceremony. It tells the story of Xolani, a lonely factory worker who accompanies men from his community to the rural mountains to initiate a group of teenage boys into manhood. But when a disobedient city-born initiate finds out about his best-kept secret of a forbidden love, his entire life starts to unravel. Some South Africans have been calling for the ban of this movie, arguing that it is an insult to the circumcision rite as it strips the tradition of its privacy and sacredness.
