The 21-year-old started braiding her hair when she was five 5 years. She subsequently discovered YouTube and a beauty blog universe where she has attracted a massive following due to her sculptures that celebrate her natural hair’s texture and thickness. Ky was inspired to start creating her elaborate updos after she came across some photographs that honoured traditional African hairstyles. She tells Vogue that “It’s important to express my African heritage through my hairstyles.” Ky also hopes to influence the political discourse with her work. For instance, she had a pistol-shaped ponytail in protest of gun violence.
