Ghanaian Afro-soul songstress Efya is undoubtedly one of the most talented and sought-after female musicians on the continent.
Born Jane Awindor in 1987, Efya, who holds a degree in Theatre Arts and Music from the University of Ghana grew up always wanting to be an entertainer just like her mother Nana Hemaa Adjoa Awindor, a renowned filmmaker who hosted one of the most popular TV shows in Ghana in the 90s, “Greetings From Abroad.”
A winner of multiple and consecutive Best Female Vocal Perfomer at the Ghana Music Awards, Efya shot into stardom in 2006 when she participated in a very popular singing competition, “Stars of The Future.” Finishing off as the first-runner up, she eventually teamed up with the winner of the competition to form a group known as “Irene and Jane” – going ahead to release their first album titled “Unveiled,” according to Kora Awards.
After their three-year recording contract expired, the duo went their separate ways, paving the way for Efya to rebrand herself and embark on a very successful solo career.
Efya released her debut critically acclaimed mixtape titled “This Is Not The Album” in 2013. She followed it up with her 2016 “Janesis” album which was also well received. That same year, she signed to Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Wizkid’s Starboy Entertainment imprint.
Though young, Efya is arguably a veteran in the African music scene. She has earned several awards and nominations both locally and internationally and has performed at renown music events.
