The 2019 edition of the yearly Black Girls Rock! awards was organized and taped last Sunday, August 25.
The annual award show founded by Beverly Bond, former DJ and model honours and promotes Black women in different fields including music, entertainment, medicine, entrepreneurship and visionary aspects with categories like “The ‘Rock Star’ Award,” “Social Humanitarian,” “Who Got Next?” “Living Legend,” “Shot Caller,” “Trailblazer,” “Motivator,” “Young, Gifted & Black,” “Star Power,” and “Visionary.”
This year’s event was hosted by award-winning actress Niecy Nash at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, where stars Angela Bassett (Icon Award), Ciara (Rock Star Award), H.E.R. (Young Gifted and Black Award), Debra Martin Chase (Shot Caller Award), and Regina King (Star Power Award) were celebrated for the outstanding achievements in the entertainment industry.
In 2006, Bond started out with a T-shirt imprint and grew it into a mentorship program for young women promoting self-worth and empowerment. Later that year, she created the BLACK GIRLS ROCK AWARDS.
In 2010 she partnered with BET to broadcast the show on a national platform, to honour the accomplishments of women of colour in categories that included acting, politics, music, and more on a national scale.
The show also has entertainment throughout the night, featuring musical performances by female recording artists in the R&B and Soul music genres.
Even though the show will not be aired until Sept. 8 at 8 p.m. on BET, here are some photos from the event:
