‘Een nothin’
This means ‘nothing much’ and it is the usual response to ‘what da wybe is?’ the variation used by the younger Bahamians.
‘Dem’
This is a common phrase across the Caribbean and it’s used as plural marker or used to refer to a group of people. For instance, ‘Chair dem’ refers to more than one chair and ‘I’m with Abigail dem’ would mean ‘I’m with Abigail and others.’
‘Potcake’
When you hear ‘potcake’ it is not a cake made in a pot. Ironically, it has nothing to do with food. ‘Potcake’ is used to refer to a mixed breed dog. Mixed breed dogs are usually fed with leftovers or scraps from cooking pots after meals are prepared. That’s how mixed breed dogs got their nickname.
