Get to know Mary Winston; she is widely known as the second Black woman to helm a Fortune 500 company. This was after she was named the interim CEO of Bed Bath & Beyond Inc., an American chain of domestic merchandise retail stores operating in Puerto Rico, Canada, and Mexico. She served on Bed, Bath & Beyond’s Board of Directors prior to being named interim CEO in 2019.

She is also ranked among the 100 most influential persons by Treasury & Risk Management magazine. As a seasoned executive with extensive expertise in governance across a wide range of industries, Winston has served for many years on large boards of public companies and audit committees with a background in finance and accounting as well as M&A experience, corporate strategy, corporate governance/compliance, cost restructuring programs and investment. She began her career at Arthur Andersen & Co as a CPA and auditor. 

In the past, she worked as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Family Dollar Stores Inc. and served in leading positions at Giant Eagle Inc., Scholastic Corporation, Visteon Corporation and Pfizer Inc., Pharm. Winston is currently the founder and president of WinsCo Enterprises Inc., a consulting firm providing financial, strategic, and board advisory services.

Here are five other businesses associated with the history-maker.

The Toronto-Dominion Bank

In 2021, Winston was elected to the board of directors of The Toronto-Dominion Bank. The bank is America’s Most Convenient Bank, and it is one of the 10 largest banks in America. It serves more than 9.6 million customers with a full range of retail, small business, and commercial banking products. Also, it provides services at more than 1,100 convenient locations throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Metro D.C., the Carolinas, and Florida.

Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc.

Winston is a minority shareholder in Chipotle Mexican Grill. She reportedly has a stake of $0.85 million.  The grill has over 2,600 restaurants, with over 93,000 employees and a market cap of over $35 billion.

In 2020, she was appointed to the board of the company alongside Gregg Engles. “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve on the board of such an innovative organization that is committed to being a leader in the restaurant industry and look forward to bringing valuable insights from my previous experience,” said Mary Winston of her appointment.

Dover Corporation (DOV)

Mary Winston owns a 0.012 percent ownership stake in Dover Corporation valued at $2.35 million. Dover Corporation is a diversified industrial manufacturer with over $5 billion of annualized revenues from operating companies that produce specialized industrial products and equipment. Winston was elected to the company’s board of directors.  

Acuity Brands, Inc.

In addition to Chipotle, Winston also has a stake in Acuity Brands, Inc. The company is a manufacturer of lighting and energy management technology solutions. She has a minority stake valued at $0.68 million. In October 2022, it was reported that it had made $4 billion in sales for the year. 

Northrop Grumman Corporation

Winston holds a minority 0.0003 percent stake valued at $0.21 million in Northrop Grumman. Northrop Grumman is a leading global aerospace and defense technology company. In March this year, she was elected to the company’s board of directors.
