The family of reggae legend, Bob Marley, is set to release a rendition of one of his most famous hit singles, One Love, to help raise funds for children affected by the COVID-19 pandemic as part of a partnership with UNICEF. The new single will be released by the reggae pioneer’s Tuff Gong International and Amplified Music.
In a statement, UNICEF announced all proceeds from the song as well as related activities will be directly channeled to “Reimagine”, the agency’s “global campaign to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic from becoming a lasting crisis for children and to ensure the post-pandemic world is more fair and equal for every child.” Jewellery brand, Pandora, has also pledged to match every dollar raised from the single, to the tune of up to $1 million.
“Over forty years ago, my father wrote One Love about unity, peace and universal love during a time when there was much trouble in the world. Even in a time when we aren’t able to get together, his message remains true today, we can get through this global crisis if we come together through one love and one heart,” Bob’s daughter, Cedella Marley, said.
Released in 1977 by Bob Marley and the Wailers, One Love/People Get Ready, which is from the former band’s Exodus album, is a popular global, sing-along anthem that promotes unity. The new rendition will feature members of Marley’s family as well as a host of other popular musicians from other parts of the world, including those living in conflict zones and children from vulnerable communities.
“(The) song is very special because of (its) message. It’s a song of equality. One love meaning love for everyone, for all humanity. It doesn’t matter the color, creed or social status or anything like that. It’s appreciating the human family. ‘One heart, let’s get together and feel all right,’” Grammy winner and son of Bob, Stephen Marley, told The Associated Press. “It’s a very important statement to my family.”
“My mom, she came in and she listened, and she gave us a thumbs up and that seal of approval is priceless.”
UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore said about the upcoming single: “One Love speaks directly to one key truth about this pandemic: Our best hope to defeat COVID-19 and to reimagine a more equal, less discriminatory world for children is through global solidarity and co-operation. We are delighted that the Marley family along with Pandora have lent their generous support, creativity and love to help the most vulnerable children.”
Social media platform, Tik Tok, will also support the initiative by hosting a special event and public challenge for fans to participate once the new single is released.
“We have a unique opportunity to chart a brighter future for the children and young people mostly likely to suffer its long-term consequences,” Fore said. “From ending violence, injustice and discrimination, to building fairer and more just societies, young people have made their message loud and clear. It is time for the rest of the world to hear it.”
One Love will be released on July 17.
