Cardi B seeks Nigerian citizenship as Iran-US crisis heightens

American rapper, Cardi B, has asked Twitter fans to choose her new Nigerian name after she tweeted early on that she was filing for Nigerian citizenship.

Her decision was provoked by the killing of top Iranian military commander, Qasem Soleimani on orders from U.S. president, Donald Trump. The rapper described the decision as ‘the dumbest”, stressing that he [Trump] is putting Americans’ lives in danger.

This move, she said, prompted her decision adding that she was also “choosing her tribe” in reference to Nigerian tribes.

Her interest in the country she visited in December 2019 threw Twitter users into frenzy.

Not only did she request for citizenship, but she also suggested her fans in Nigeria pick between the more the eastern-like name, Chioma B or the Muslim-like, Cadijat.

The Grammy-winning rapper who has a teaming fanbase in the country has been toying with the idea of making Nigeria her second base after her first visit. 

In a couple of other tweets, she shared a photoshopped image of Offset dressed in the Nigerian traditional attire, ‘agbada’ with the caption, “Convince him to move with me”.

Meanwhile, the chairman of Nigeria’s diaspora commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, on Saturday responded to Cardi’s announcement.

On Twitter, Abike wrote, “As one in charge of the Diaspora for Nigeria, We can’t wait to receive you again.”

“Our doors are open, sister. And you need to talk a walk through the Door of Return in Badagry. It’s an indescribable experience.”

The musician, born Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar, is one of the most sought-after female hip hop artists as she successfully challenged the dominance of Nicki Minaj in that genre.

The Grammy-winning artist, who is best known for her vociferous style of rap, has released platinum singles including the popular, “Bodak Yellow” and “I Like It.

Together with Offset, the couple who are still in their twenties are worth over $50 million. So far, they have four number one hits on Billboard’s HOT 100 chart.
