It is a well-known fact that Stevie Wonder has been blind almost all his life. But during a recent episode of his “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast, retired NBA star Carmelo Anthony jokingly recalled an encounter where the blind legendary singer told him that he loved watching him play.
Per US Weekly, Anthony 40, told his co-hosts that the meeting with Wonder happened during the 2011 All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles.
“He said, ‘I love watching you play,’” the former New York Knicks star said in reference to Wonder, 74. Anthony’s co-hosts, Rudy Gay, The Kid Mero and Kazeem Famuyide, burst into laughter after he revealed what Wonder had told him.
“I’m out,” Gay said. Anthony, who was adamant Wonder had told him that, also said LeBron James was even around when the blind singer uttered those words to him.
“There’s a lot of people that can vouch for this,” Anthony said. “There’s a lot of people that was around that can vouch for this.”
Anthony also jokingly said that he ended up “crying before the game” after the encounter. “It f—ed me up,” he recalled. ‘I love watching you play.’ It f—ed me up.”
The 40-year-old also reiterated he was telling the truth. “You really think that I’m going to make some s— up like that?” he asked his co-hosts. “I don’t play around with that type s—.”
Anthony’s comments come after his son Kiyan decided to follow in his footsteps after he committed to Syracuse University.
“Ultimately, it came down to my relationship with the staff,” Kiyan told ESPN. “From day one, when they started recruiting me, they made me feel like it was family. My dad’s name on the facility is special, but I want to go in there and create my own name, and I’ve already done that through my dedication in the offseason, with early-morning practices, playing at camps, playing on the circuit.”
Kiyan continued: “I’m going to do everything Coach [Adrian] Autry needs me to do. We talk a lot, especially late at night, about how we can make Syracuse basketball great. Off the court, Coach is super cool. You could go out with him on a Friday night. He’s still young and connects with all his players. He is very relatable.”
