Konso people of Ethiopia

Also known as the Xonsita, the Konso people are located in the South-Central part of Ethiopia. Named after its inhabitants, Konso, which has been in existence for over 400 years was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 due to its unique and beautiful cultural landscape and settlements.

The Konso people are famously known for their Waga sculptures. These unique carvings are made to celebrate and pay tribute to deceased men who hit significant and memorable milestones in their lives such as killing an enemy or a wild animal.

The Waga sculptures usually come in groups including the hero, his wives and the enemy he defeated. The carvings are also custom made and sold to tourists. Enjoy these beautiful sculptures and don’t forget to visit Konso for your custom made Waga sculptures when you touchdown in Ethiopia!
