Negro Spirituals

Negro spirituals are a collection of monophonic songs sang in groups by black people. This genre originated among slaves on plantations from the 17th century.

As slaves worked, they mourned their situation and consoled themselves with hope rooted in the lyrics of the spirituals. Also at communal meals and other events off-work.

The genre of spirituals had a particular bend towards Christianity and is credited with modern-day black gospel.
