Janelle Monáe, 39, recently shared a rather extraordinary claim during a discussion with Lucy Dacus, 30, for the Rolling Stone Musicians on Musicians issue.
The “Make Me Feel” artist asserted that she time-traveled to the 1970s to attend a David Bowie concert, a revelation that left Dacus visibly shocked, as reported by People.
Monáe recounted this experience while elaborating on her fondness for Halloween, stating, “I’ve always loved transforming, and I think that’s what I love about Halloween, and that’s what I love about world building through music… I think when I saw David Bowie…”
“You saw him?” Dacus asked.
“I did,” said Monáe, unflinching. “I traveled back into the 1970s, and I saw him do [The Rise and Fall of] Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, and it was incredible.”
Dacus, looking pretty confused, said, “You traveled back.”
“Yeah, I was backstage,” continued Monáe. “I was like, ‘This is what I want to do,’ and so I jetted back to the 2000s, and I was like, ‘I can have the musical, make the music, create the lyrics and create community around transformation and being queer’ — and not even in sexuality, but just in how we see the world.”
Monáe elaborated on her earlier statement about Halloween, explaining that the holiday is a time when “people give themselves permission to be on my frequency.”
She added, “Let’s transform. Let’s play. Let’s go outside the mundane and what people know us as every day. Leave room to allow yourself to transform.”
Monáe also shared details about a screenplay she is currently developing, which she envisions as a complete creative endeavor.

She emphasized her ambition, saying “The goal has always been to write, star in, do the soundtrack, produce. A lot of things, I know, but I have to fully realize an idea, and I know that I will not stop until I get this.”
“I wish I had some sort of pipe that I can push in my brain. Because the time that it takes… You have the idea, and to realize it, you gotta talk to all these people,” continued the performer. “I’m just like, ‘I see it!”’
Netizens, however, had a lot to say about her time travel revelation. While others expressed shock and concern, others took it as a sarcastic joke or a lighthearted jest.
One commenter wrote, “half the comments insisting janelle is being sarcastic and the other half insisting she has the power to actually travel back in time is killing me like i’m going to be honest yall i think this is just a classic case of spiritual psychosis”
Another said, “I feel like this is concerning, is she okay?”
One other wrote, “mind you david bowie’s last concert was in 2004. when lucy asked “you saw him?” she was probably thinking janelle saw him as an old man, then the time travel talk happened. this is the funniest f*cking video i’ve ever seen”
