Elon Musk is pushing back against a major Republican legislative win, voicing concern over a House-approved spending bill championed by President Donald Trump.
In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Musk criticized the legislation, dubbed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, for increasing the federal deficit and undercutting efforts toward government efficiency.
“I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing,” Musk said.

The bill passed the House narrowly last week, 215–214, with all Democrats and two Republicans, Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Warren Davidson of Ohio voting against it. House Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris of Maryland opted to vote “present.”

While the legislation marks a victory for Trump and GOP House leadership, who managed to unite around several major campaign pledges, Musk’s comments stand in contrast. Trump, who supports the bill, has praised its provisions, which include an extension of his 2017 tax cuts and exemptions for tips, overtime pay, and Social Security income.
Musk’s remarks are particularly notable as he recently stepped back from his advisory role at the Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE, which aims to streamline federal operations.

The bill seeks to slash $1.5 trillion from federal spending but comes as the national debt surpasses $36 trillion. The Treasury reports the government has already spent $1.05 trillion more than it collected in the 2025 fiscal year.
Despite House approval, the bill’s future remains uncertain. The Senate must still debate and pass its own version, with GOP leaders eyeing a final vote before July 4 in hopes of delivering another legislative win to Trump.
