An explosive device was on Sunday found at a South African mosque, where a knife attack took place last week. said the police.

The mosque in  Verulam in  KwaZulu Natal province was the site of a deadly knife attack that saw the death of one man and the injury of two others. The attackers also set the mosque on fire.

With this backdrop, the police swept the mosque on Friday but found nothing.

However, worshippers were evacuated from the mosque Sunday evening after a device resembling an explosive was discovered under a chair. It was attached to a cellphone, according to local news site eNCA.

“We can’t say too much now but the guys were getting the place ready, partitioning off the damaged sections of the place that were burnt… and they found the bomb near the pulpit,” Mosque chairman and co-founder Azaad Seedat told TimesLIVE

A bomb squad arrived at the mosque to investigate if the device is explosive.
