Sudan gained its independence after several internal conflicts.

With a population of 40 million people, it is bordered by Egypt to the north, Libya to the northwest, Chad to the west, the Central African Republic to the southwest, South Sudan to the south, Ethiopia to the southeast, Eritrea to the east, and the Red Sea to the northeast.

It is a unique swamp region formed by the White Nile locally known as the Bahr al Jabal meaning “Mountain Sea”.

According to the UN World Happiness Report of 2018, Sudan ranks third least happy country in the world. Petroleum is Sudan’s major natural resource. The country also has significant deposits of chromium ore, copper, iron ore, mica, silver, gold, tungsten, and zinc.

In commemoration of its independence, we cast the spotlight on some famous people you probably didn’t know are from Sudan.
