Five black musicians you probably didn’t know double as politicians

 Martha Reeves

Born in Detroit, American R&B and pop singer ventured into politics in 2005. As the lead singer of the Motown girl group, Reeves, spoke on behalf of musicians for better wages and royalties in front of congress in 2007.

She served for a term on Detroit’s City Council in 2005 and helped get a Detroit street renamed Barry Gordy, Jr. Boulevard, but was occasionally criticized for missing important votes while touring.

Unfortunately, she lost re-election two years later.
