Grace Ogot (1930-2015)

The multifaceted Grace Ogot was born in 1930 and was a founding member of the Writer’s Association of Kenya. She was a journalist, nurse, politician and diplomat and together with Charity Waciuma became the first English-speaking female Kenyan writer to be published.

A Year Of Sacrifice was her first published work, which made an appearance in the African journal Black Orpheus in 1963. Many of Ogot’s writings centered on the traditions of the Luo people.

It was no surprise that her first novel,  The Promised Land, published in 1966 was mainly about the Luo emigration. She died in March 2015.
