A Brevard County man has confessed to killing his ex-girlfriend because she would not return his calls or text messages, police said. Carlos Lemont Jones II, 23, turned himself in to the Palm Bay Police Department after allegedly committing the offense.
A police press release said Jones has been charged with premeditated first-degree murder for the death of Sha’Dayla Johnson. He was also charged with the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
An affidavit obtained by Oxygen True Crime said he confessed to killing Johnson on Tuesday. He told police he was not remorseful and said “if he had to do it again, he would have killed [Johnson] and her father.”
Jones reportedly told police that he woke up angry on the day he committed the murder because his ex-girlfriend was not picking up his calls and texts. According to WFLA, he then decided that he was going to shoot and kill Johnson, police said.
Reports said Jones drove to Johnson’s house around 7:40 a.m. Tuesday, confronted her, and exchanged words with her before pointing his handgun at her and shooting her in the back 15 times as she was walking away.
According to Fox29, police spoke to Johnson’s father, Torrance Clark, who said he heard gunshots and saw Jones staring toward the home. He added that he found his daughter face down on the carport floor. Jones and his daughter broke up two weeks ago after an argument, according to Clark. He added that Jones has been calling and harassing his daughter to try and get back together with her but to no avail.
Jones reportedly told police that he bought the gun for self-protection. However, after the incident, he changed his clothes and threw the gun in a storm drain in Rockledge, officials said.
Meanwhile, Jones is currently being held at Brevard County Jail without bond after his first court appearance on Wednesday. Court records said he will be back in court on January 19, 2023.
