Nigerians woke up on 23rd December to the shocking news of a nine months pregnant woman whose womb and the urinary tract were stitched together by a medical doctor in Ondo State, Nigeria.

The medical doctor was arrested by a team of Special Intervention Squad, following a report of unprofessional conduct lodged against him at the Police command.

Investigations’ by operatives of the Ondo State Police command revealed that the doctor, Rabiu Olalekan, performed a cesarean operation (CS) on the pregnant woman (names withheld). Further investigations to ascertain the doctor’s credibility revealed that Rabiu Olalekan was an unlicensed quack doctor.

The state Police Commissioner, Oyeyemi Oyediran, while parading the suspect, said that the suspect has been presenting himself as the Chief Medical Doctor of Iremide Private Hospital, Orita Ojo, Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.

Presently, doctors at the State Mother and Child Hospital Trauma Center are trying to save the life of the pregnant woman who was rushed to the hospital because of excessive bleeding from her private part.

While interrogating the suspect, the Police operatives discovered that the suspect, who had been deceiving people by presenting himself as a medical doctor, was not a medical doctor, but only attended a School of Health Technology, where he studied Community Health Extension Work.

The suspect confessed that he wanted to be a medical doctor and that he has been operating illegally for years, intending to go back to university.

“I know what I was doing was wrong. It was because there was nobody to help me after leaving the school of Health Technology. I have been operating this hospital for years and this is the second operation I would perform,” he said.

“The woman in question was unable to give birth to the baby, that was why I performed the operation. It was successful and she left only to return days after that she was bleeding from her vagina. I discovered that she was not using her drugs and all my efforts to stop the bleeding proved abortive. I referred her to the Mother and Child Hospital in Ondo. I want to beg the police and government to forgive me. I will stop the illegal practice after this. They should have mercy on me. My wife is nine months pregnant and that’s my first child. I want to be around to father my child,” he continued.

The suspect will be charged in court after concluding the investigations, the commissioner said.
