The Hamar ethnic group of Ethiopia has a culture where women subject themselves to beatings as part of an initiation ceremony from men. Even after the ceremony, they still subject themselves to beatings unless they give birth to at least two children.

Traditionally, the men do not need to explain the reasons behind the flogging.
