Ghanaian-American designer Virgil Abloh dies at 41 after battle with rare form of cancer

Ghanaian-American fashion designer Virgil Abloh has died at the age of 41. Abloh, who was Louis Vuitton’s first Black artistic director, passed away on Sunday after a battle with cancer.

The news of his death was shared on his Instagram page. The statement reads:

“We are devastated to announce the passing of our beloved Virgil Abloh, a fiercely devoted father, husband, son, brother, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife Shannon Abloh, his children Lowe Abloh and Grey Abloh, his sister Edwina Abloh, his parents Nee and Eunice Abloh, and numerous dear friends and colleagues.

“For over two years, Virgil valiantly battled a rare, aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma. He chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture.

“Through it all, his work ethic, infinite curiosity, and optimism never wavered. Virgil was driven by his dedication to his craft and to his mission to open doors for others and create pathways for greater equality in art and design. He often said, “Everything I do is for the 17-year-old version of myself,” believing deeply in the power of art to inspire future generations.

“We thank you all for your love and support, and we ask for privacy as we grieve and celebrate Virgil’s life.”

Since March 2018, the name Abloh has been keenly followed in the fashion industry. The Ghanaian American became the center of attention when he was named Louis Vuitton’s new artistic director and gave big fashion labels a run for their money with the release of Off White, the streetwear and luxury fashionthat brought an edgy twist into the fashion game.

The successful designer and creative director subsequently took bigger strides as he launched his own exclusive label starting with a jewelry line — a collection of jewelry that was inspired by nothing other than paper clips.

He said during an interview that one of his aims is to create a fashion label that feels luxurious but yet affordable to anyone who is attracted to the very different and edgy designs. Abloh has worked with top names such as Kanye West and Serena Williams and several other huge fashion labels.
