Citadel of Qaitbay – Egypt
Alternatively called Fort Qaitbay, Citadel of Qaitbay is in Egypt, specifically the Mediterranean Sea coast in Alexandria. The fort is specifically located at the Eastern harbour entrance, the eastern point of the Pharos Island at the same site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria which is one of the 7 wonders of the world.
The 17-meter high fort was built in 1477AD by the Mamluks by order of Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qai’iy Bay. The grand fort is a significant symbol of the powerful Islamic Dynasty that reigned through trade and a strong defence system.
