Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy surprised his mom, Nicky Jones, with a special birthday gift during the game against the New Orleans Saints on October 7.
Jones, celebrating her birthday at Arrowhead Stadium, proudly watched as her 21-year-old son scored a three-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, contributing to the Chiefs’ 26-13 victory and marking their fifth consecutive win to start the season, according to PEOPLE.
Worthy had taken a handoff from tight end Travis Kelce and rushed to the end zone in a heartwarming moment. After scoring, he ran to the stands and threw the ball to his mom who was celebrating her birthday.
The two shared a sweet hug, and the Chiefs shared a clip of the moment on X, captioning it, “Celebrating mom’s birthday with a touchdown.”
“Xavier Worthy says his mom Nicky is his best friend,” Monday Night Football sideline reporter Lisa Salters explained. “He says that she had him when she was 18; so she’s like really his sister. He said, ‘Our relationship is really close. She’s meant the world to me. She’s just been there for me every step of the way. We have that special bond. Talk all the time.’ “
Worthy is making an impressive start in his first NFL season after being drafted in April. He gained attention with a record-breaking 4.21-second 40-yard dash at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine.
The former Texas Longhorns player also received support from Taylor Swift, who liked an Instagram video of Worthy being drafted.
His mother has actively been supporting her son on X, posting updates during his games. In a January 2024 tweet, she expressed that being his mother is “one of my greatest joys in life.”
“Thank you for representing yourself, family, & city the way you did these past 3 yrs. No off the field issues. Played every game, even when injured,” Jones wrote. “Persevered through bad times & stayed humble during good times. Being your mom is one of my greatest joys in life! So thankful!”
Worthy and the Chiefs have a bye week coming up, before they play against the San Francisco 49ers on October 20.
