Russell Wilson is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and his contract extension with the Denver Broncos gives credence to this. In March, the Seattle Seahawks traded Wilson to the Broncos.
Wilson and the Broncos have strengthened their newly formed partnership with a five-year contract extension worth $245 million, including $165 million in guaranteed money.
“In just a few short months with the Broncos, Russell has already had a dramatic effect on this organization both on and off the field,” General Manager George Paton said in a statement. “Our organization is fully committed to winning and competing for Super Bowls with Russell as a Bronco for many years to come.”
The deal makes Wilson the third highest paid NFL player, in terms of guaranteed money, after Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson with $230 million and then Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray with $189.5 million, according to Revolt.
The Boston Globe notes that Wilson will earn an average of $49 million a year beginning in 2024 per details of the contract, which will end in the 2028 season.
“For me, it wasn’t really about how much, necessarily,” Wilson told the Washington Post. “It was about how many — how many Super Bowls we win. And that was really the focus.”
Shortly after the deal was announced, Ciara took to Twitter and congratulated her husband on such a remarkable achievement.
“Baby @DangeRussWilson I am so proud of you! You’re the most dedicated and hardworking person I know!” Ciara wrote. “It’s been so beautiful to see you become a Bronco! So excited for the journey ahead! You’re 1 of 1! My greatest inspiration. I love you so much!”
In a March media appearance, Russel revealed that he spends nearly $1 million to keep himself in top-tier shape. Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with his wife, Ciara, he explained his motives behind investing a lot to maintain his shape and form as a football player.
During their discussion, Kimmel asked Wilson if he truly spends $1 million a year on his body. Wilson replied saying that is true, explaining that his plan is to play in the NFL until he’s 45, Vanity Fair reported.
“Yeah, it’s a process. It’s a lifestyle. I think when you are trying to play as long as I’m trying to play. I’m trying to play until I’m 45,” he said. If everything goes according to plan, the 33-year-old would have spent about $12 million on his body by the time he hangs up his cleats.
“Yeah, for me, the mentality, the focus level, everything you have to do has to be surrounded around that,” he added. “It’s been an amazing journey for me so far.”
Ciara also expressed support for her husband when Kimmel jokingly asked if she had any issues with the amount of cash he was spending to maintain his physique. “No, I’m in it with him,” the singer said.
