Display Ceremonies
When a king is ready to choose his own wife, an announcement is made in the Kingdom for all eligible virgins to be chosen for a display ceremony. After a pre-selection is done by queen mothers and women of the royal court, the prospective brides are dressed in traditional queen outfits or made to cover themselves while leaving their chest bare. After a long procession, the prospective queens line up in front of the king amidst drumming and dancing. It is during this display that a lady who catches the eye of the king is chosen. The display ceremony was one way that commoners gain royalty status and was a very important ceremony for them. Immediately a wife is chosen, she is trained by the queen mother and a wedding is organized after the training is successful.
