In a time when almost every charitable event requires you to put on your formal best, Kor Foundation is taking on a more unique approach to raising education awareness with its first-ever “Laugh for a Cause” comedy show on Friday, November 21st, in Queens, N.Y. The event will feature a number of African comedians and performers, including social media sensation Chief Obi and two of Kor Foundation’s 2014 Ambassadors, Foxy P and DJ YB.
Tickets for the event are available now online.
We were first introduced to the Kor Foundation at the organization’s annual gala, which showcased their work to improve education in Nigeria. Stanley Onwuakor and Oluchi Obi currently head the foundation and often travel to Nigeria to provide supplies and upkeep to the foundation’s new library built at a primary school in Imo State, Nigeria.
The Kor Foundation leadership describes “Laugh for a Cause” as “an exciting opportunity to host our community for a fun night in support of a worthy cause.”
The event will host a new crop of young African comedians and performers based in the United States. Guests will enjoy fresh and funny perspectives on African identity with guest host Bawo Lawal.
Face2Face Africa had a chance to speak with headliners of the event to hear why they felt “Laugh for a Cause” would be a great way to support the Kor Foundation.
When asked about his support for the Kor Foundation, Foxy P said, “With so many causes and opportunities to give back, I’ve been especially impressed by Kor Foundation because I have seen first-hand the meaningful impact they have had in Nigeria. They are serious about what they want to do and I am confident the project to support the primary schools will definitely be successful. I can promise people they will enjoy Laugh for a Cause and my perspective as someone who used to live in Nigeria and now lives in the U.S.”
Foxy P and DJ YB have pledged their commitment to the Kor Foundation as one of the organization’s 2014-2015 Ambassadors. Foxy P not only works as a comedian for AfricanComedians.com, but he also serves as host of “Africa Today Show” on YouTube and was a former radio host on TruSpot Radio.
The guest DJ for the event, DJ YB, said he is excited that the Kor Foundation will be able to reach a diverse audience with “the universal language of laughter” and hopes it will gain partners who are also interested in supporting education in Africa.
DJ YB is based in New York City and has hosted several book drives for the Kor Foundation to gather hundreds of books for its library and partner schools in Nigeria. He said, “My support for Kor Foundation stems from his interest in international advocacy and non-profit fundraising for organizations for Africa by Africans. ‘Laugh for a Cause’ will be unlike any other event in our community because it will leave people with a positive feeling and provides an easy way to support a great cause. The event will feature new and local talent, which provides opportunities both here and abroad. We’re hoping folks will come out and have a good time!”
