The Muse Mirror is an interactive mirror that allows users to try out beauty products virtually. Toye Onikoyi from Rhode Island created the product for the beauty industry when he was thinking about a gift for his girlfriend.
“Instead of making her another scrapbook, let me make her something she uses every day which is a mirror and let me put some things on her mirror, like her calendar, events a greeting telling her that ‘hey you look beautiful,'” Onikoyi told WBZ.
When Onikoyi’s girlfriend received the gift, she posted it online and it went viral. From there, he started getting messages from those who expressed interest in getting the tech product.
Years down the line, he has now launched The Muse Mirror for people who are interested in his product. He plans to offer live one-on-one makeup artist sessions and the company will also be releasing a mobile app later.
“I see The Muse Mirror as the mirror that everyone has in their home,” Onikoyi said. “I see it as a bridge between retail and e-commerce.”
The tech product works like a large tablet offering third-party apps like Netflix and YouTube, according to Onikoyi, who is a University of Rhode Island graduate. He added that the function of the mirror goes beyond just having third-party apps. “It will present a new affirmation video to you. Kind of like a morning pick me up,” said the Rhode Island man.
He also said that the product is “engineered to learn about you, and what you like and give your suggestions on products,” according to WBZ. “We wanted to help you with your daily routine. We wanted to help people find products for skin care.”
As to what The Muse Mirror can do, Onikoyi said the sky can only be the limit. “Right now, there’s not a good way to try on products at home before you purchase it,” he said. “Clothing that may not fit you, makeup where you don’t really understand that this foundation isn’t right for you.”
