James Pembroke

James Pembroke had a bumpy upbringing during the early years of his life. He was born to enslaved parents who were separated by slaveholders when he was a child. In 1827, Pembroke escaped from slavery in Maryland to freedom. He had a sense of family when the slaveholder of his mother decided to buy his father and relocate him to his plantation.

He gleaned the advantages of his freedom a decade ahead by becoming an ordained minister of the gospel and furthered his education at Yale University where he graduated, according to Connecticut History.
