For 50 years, Cal Murray has driven for UPS. The Houston native has been accident-free for 50 years and has driven an incredible 4 million miles.
He told the UPS Newsroom that “the company’s commitment to safety training is what has kept me safe. UPS invests a lot of time and money to give us the tools we need to be successful – and it pays off. We are the safest drivers on the road.”
Murray said that he relies on the knowledge he has gained from his substantial UPS training to help him properly handle the challenges of his profession.
He remarked, “I drive one of the most dangerous stretches of highway in the U.S. and see accidents on a weekly basis. Dealing with other drivers on the road can be a challenge. You have to drive not only for yourself but also for others.”
The organization presented the committed driver with a newly minted Circle of Honor patch this year in recognition of his 50 years of safe driving.
According to the UPS site, roughly 10,000 UPS drivers worldwide have driven for the company for 25 years or more without an accident, totaling approximately 1.5 billion miles without so much as a fender-bender as of 2023. The UPS Circle of Honor patch worn proudly on the sleeve identifies those who have earned the distinction.
Murray mentors younger generations of drivers, frequently imparting the knowledge he’s accumulated over the years.
He said, “I observe drivers daily and point out what they are doing right and where they can improve. I want them to be as safe as possible and return home to their families.”
