The family of MiKah King is prepared to say goodbye to the 15-year-old athlete who died unexpectedly after practice. The teen, a football player at Arabia Mountain High School, died suddenly after experiencing a medical emergency during practice on July 22.
According to a GoFundMe set up to help the family through this difficult time, King was exuberant, and his absence was greatly felt.
“His sudden loss has left an immeasurable void in the lives of everyone who knew and loved him,” his family wrote, according to 11 Alive News. “Mikah was more than just a talented athlete. He was a spark — full of energy, compassion, and joy. Whether sprinting across the field, lifting spirits in the locker room, or cheering on his teammates, Mikah led with heart and humility. To his coaches, he was a natural leader. To his friends, he was family. And to his loved ones, he was a light that made every day brighter.”
In addition to the family’s devastating loss, the online fundraiser says King’s twin brother is presently undergoing treatment in the hospital for sickle cell anemia-related issues.
The family added, “Your donation will go toward funeral and memorial expenses, providing much-needed relief during a time of unimaginable grief. No family is ever prepared for such a loss — emotionally or financially — and your support will allow them to focus on healing without the added burden of expenses.”
“Mikah touched countless lives in his 15 years — on the field, in the classroom, and throughout his community. Let’s come together to remember him, celebrate him, and ensure his spirit lives on.”
“The entire King family is in our thoughts and prayers, and we ask that you keep them lifted in love and comfort as they navigate this heartbreaking moment,” Arabia Mountain High School principal Tanya J. Mason said in a letter sent to families and obtained by WXIA-TV.
The school district did not specify what caused the medical emergency or whether the student had any past health conditions. Mason encouraged the school system in her letter to “refrain from sharing unconfirmed details” concerning King’s death and mentioned that grief counselors are accessible to children.
“Our primary goal is to ensure that our students feel supported emotionally during this incredibly difficult time,” Mason said. “Counselors will continue to be available in the coming days for any student or staff member who may need support.”
King played football at Southwest DeKalb High School as a defensive tackle and offensive guard, according to students from Arabia Mountain High School who spoke to WANF-TV. Jordan Hollie, one of King’s closest friends, described the teenager as “a generally funny, goofy person.”
“He loved [football] as much as I did,” Hollie told WANF-TV. “He was my practice partner. He would push me to be better.”
