Megan Thee Stallion’s personal life hasn’t been all that good over the last few years. The 30-year-old Houston native lost her mother, Holly Thomas, to brain cancer in March 2019. Thomas, a former rapper who went by the stage name Holly-Wood, was initially Megan’s manager before her passing.
Megan then made the news in July 2020 when fellow rapper, Tory Lanez, shot and injured her in the feet during an argument after they left a pool party hosted at reality star Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood mansion.
Though the WAP rapper initially told authorities that she wasn’t shot, claiming that she was scared to tell the truth, she ultimately confirmed Lanez had opened fire on her. Lanez, born Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, was eventually sentenced to 10 years in prison in December 2022 after he was found guilty on three gun-related charges in the shooting.
Lanez’s arrest and subsequent conviction did not sit too well with some fans, and Megan continues to receive online backlash.

Megan, during a recent interview with Taraji P. Henson at the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, an institution that focuses on mental health education, admitted that it got to a point where she realized she needed therapy, VICE.com reported.
The Savage rapper, born Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, touched on grief, stating that she initially couldn’t find a way to tackle that feeling. She said it eventually got to a point where she decided that she no longer wanted to be incessantly depressed and miserable.
“Through all of that grief, I was just working and trying to be the best Megan I could be,” an emotional Megan said. “I didn’t know I needed therapy until one day, I was just like, ‘Damn, I’m really sad, and it’s really scary how sad I am.’ And it was like, I didn’t care what happened to me. And I didn’t want to feel like that, like I should care about my life.”
Megan also touched on mental health and her mission to break the stigma surrounding it when the Trevor Project, an LGBTQ nonprofit, honored her with the 2025 Mental Health Champion award.
“My goal has always been to use my platform to help break stigmas around mental health and provide resources for those seeking safe spaces to have honest and heartfelt conversations,” she said.
“Mental health impacts all of us, so it’s important to lead with love and empathy.”
