A 31-year-old Chicago mother was fatally shot during a physical altercation after she dropped off her son at school.
Per ABC7 Chicago, the fatal incident occurred on September 8, and the deceased woman was identified as Romeca Meeks-Blackmon.
An unidentified woman known to Meeks-Blackmon is said to have shot her in the face after they got into the physical altercation. Police said Meeks-Blackmon succumbed to her injuries after she was taken to a hospital.
A suspect linked to the shooting was initially taken into custody before being released, CBS News Chicago reported. Authorities have yet to file charges in connection with the shooting, but the case was described as domestic in nature. The reason behind the altercation had also not been established at the time of this report.

Meeks-Blackmon’s mother, on September 12, emotionally paid tribute to her deceased daughter and called for justice during a gathering at the location where she was killed. Leaders who were present at the gathering also called on authorities to put in extra effort to tackle violence and to enforce the House Bill 158. The state law declares violence a public health crisis, ABC7 Chicago reported.
“She loved her son, she loved me, she loved her siblings, and I loved her the same. I want justice. She didn’t deserve it,” Meeks-Blackmon’s mother, Tina McMiller, said at the gathering.
In August, Meeks-Blackmon took to Instagram to offer her best wishes to her son and reaffirm her support for him as he started first grade. On the day she was fatally shot, Meeks-Blackmon also took to her Instagram stories to share a photo of an affectionate note that she wrote to her son and left in his lunchbox, PEOPLE reported.
“Happy Monday, son, today is the first start to this and you can start off strong,” read the note. “Always remain yourself. You’re the coolest, smartest and funniest kid I know. I love you so much and you make me so proud. Have a great day. Mommy loves you.”
