Nigerians fume over death of pupils in collapsed Lagos building that houses a school

A four-storey building in Lagos housing a school with over 100 pupils as well as apartments collapsed on Wednesday leaving 12 fatalities and several injuries. The incident, which occurred at Ita Faji on Lagos Island left rescuers and volunteers scrambling through the rubble to rescue victims.

The Daily Monitor reports that the building in question had been listed for demolition by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) due to structural failure. The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, also disclosed the school was operating illegally.

Scores of Nigerians took to social media to vent their anger over yet another avoidable tragedy that could have prevented if the systems were working.
