An Ohio father fatally shot his 16-year-old daughter after he suspected her to be an intruder in their home, the deceased teen’s mother said, per NBC. The incident happened at their home garage. And the teen, identified as Janae Hairston, passed away at a hospital an hour after the shooting.

Following the shooting, the teen’s mother called 911 to report her daughter had been accidentally shot by her father. During the call, the mother pleaded for an ambulance to be dispatched to their home. A man was also heard in the background repeatedly saying, “Breathe, baby.”

“My husband made a mistake and shot her because he thought she was an intruder,” the distressed mother said. “She was in our garage and my husband just didn’t know what was going on. Oh, my God.”

The mother also told the dispatcher her daughter had probably been shot in the chest. And the deceased teen’s parents were heard asking what she was doing in the garage.

In a tweet, the Columbus Division of Police said no charges have been filed in connection with the shooting. The case has, however, been forwarded to the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office to review.
