In Africa, marriages are seen as an important milestone. It comes with fanfare, celebrations and even more.
Away from that, there are also some demands that either side of the family needs to fulfil. Some of these are considered part of the bride price, but others are seen as an independent demand, usually from the bride’s family.
Recently, a Twitter user by the name @_noHANDLE posted a series of demands a prospective bride’s family listed for the grooms family.
The list comes with items in different categories including consultation gifts, items specified for the marriage proper with gifts for the father, mother and for other family members, gifts for royal princess rites, gifts for women who would create roadblocks for the groom’s entry, and gift items for the youth and children.
And these are just for the traditional wedding.
So my sister’s fiancé’s friend is getting married, she’s from Akwa Ibom
Here is a list of demands from her family, I’m still crying for him ?????? pic.twitter.com/26UFVRS1S9— Bàbá Èléwà (@_noHANDLE) August 3, 2018
Many thought this list was too long and the demands outrageous. Here are some reactions:
Lol. I honestly do not believe in this list thing. The man should be free to gift the family whatever he can afford. This bride price list thing is a form of slavery in my opinion.

The girl parents should better help negotiate. If I am to marry from that village without the parents helping to beat down the price, hmm. You won’t receive any help from me nor see your grandchildren for the next 5 years.

SMH. This is extortion! After someone will open mouth and say “they don’t use money to marry”. No, it’s tissue paper they use in marrying.
