Musician, producer, and Louis Vuitton men’s artistic director, Pharrell Williams, has been honored with France’s Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour).

The prestigious title was personally bestowed upon him by French President Emmanuel Macron at a private ceremony held at the historic Élysée Palace in Paris.

According to an email shared by Louis Vuitton with FashionNetwork.com, Williams received the order’s insignia in the palace’s stunning Winter Garden. The award, initially announced on Bastille Day, July 14, 2025, recognizes his significant and diverse contributions to the creative industries, ranging from music, fashion, and culture.

During his speech, complete with some witty banter, Macron ran down a list of Pharrell’s many accomplishments. He mentioned taking the multi-hyphenate’s advice on wearing cool sunglasses and noted his participation in the Pièces Jaunes charity concert with his wife, Brigitte Macron.

“Dear Pharrell, listing all your achievements would be impossible. You have the rare ability to live a thousand passions within a single lifetime,” Macron said, as translated by Vanity Fair France. “You managed to do so because you are incredibly talented, but also thanks to your steadfast discipline that could intimidate even an Olympic athlete. A 5 a.m. wake-up call. Five hundred sit-ups. Meditation. A hot bath, a cold shower — and sometimes even a burst of songwriting in the bathroom itself.”

He added, “At an early age, you discovered music, which set the rhythm of your days and brought color to your everyday life. Your grandmother spotted it and gave you your very first instrument: a snare drum. A simple object, but one that taught you how a beat can set the pace and make people dance.”

The politician continued, “Behind the brilliance of your success lies this daily rigor. But also, a guiding principle to which you remain deeply faithful: Gratitude. gratitude for the journey that brought you here, allowing you, despite worldwide recognition, to remain the humble, witty and deeply human creator so admired by your teams.”

Williams, known for his diverse creative talents, including music production, songwriting, vibrant performances, and a unique aesthetic style, received the award alongside his wife, Helen Lasichanh, the mother of their four children.

His broad influence led to his appointment as the artistic director for Louis Vuitton’s men’s collections in February 2023. This move made waves in the fashion industry and preceded similar appointments of other prominent cultural figures to lead luxury houses.

Williams, born in Virginia, US, in 1973, gained fame through various creative endeavors. His music career included being part of the production duo, the Neptunes, and the band, N.E.R.D. He also achieved success as a solo artist and songwriter, notably creating music for films like the 2013 animation, Despicable Me

Williams also branched into acting and the fashion world, collaborating with Japanese creative, Nigo, on the clothing lines, Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream. He additionally developed a unisex fragrance with Comme des Garçons’ perfume division before eventually joining Louis Vuitton.

The recent presentation follows closely on the heels of Williams’ latest menswear show for Louis Vuitton at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, which took place just three days prior during Paris Men’s Fashion Week.
