The unique art of lip piercing and stretching is said to be still prevalent in Africa among the Mursi people in Ethiopia who have plates infused to their piercings mostly for aesthetics. Some cultures in Sudan also wear lip plates. It is believed that lip plates are to women as moustaches and beards are to men.
