I felt compelled to make an online documentary exposing the inhumanity in denying women access to safe abortion services in Kenya. As a woman in Kenya, it scares me to think that I am not entitled to a full range of my reproductive health rights; that religion, culture and a patriarchal society have more of a say on the condition of my body than I do.
The statistics alone are enough to suggest that the consequences of restrictive abortion laws, especially for lower socio-economic persons, are subjecting women to injury or condemning them to death when they eventually elect to undergo unsafe abortions.
This narrative accompanies facts and figures surrounding the subject matter of abortion in Kenya. I know this isn’t a popular topic of conversation in Africa and I know we pride ourselves on being impliedly governed by our cultures/religions/traditions, but not talking about it won’t make it go away.
