Young Gifted & Black
Founded in 1980, this Oakland, California-based organization engages local youths ages 7-17 to use historic poetry, rap and songs to teach “Black History and Black Pride.” Under the direction of Artistic Director Laroilyn H Davis and her son, associate Artistic Director Hodari Davis, Young Gifted & Black endows its participants with self-esteem, knowledge of their shared heritage and practically performing arts experience.

The organization is currently running a crowdfunding campaign to bring fifteen of YGB’s 50 participants to Ghana for the 2016 Emancipation Day ceremonies at Cape Coast and Elmina. These trips are a culmination of YGB’s purpose: “to intensely study African-American history and culture through poetry, music, writings, art and movement.”
