A 23-year-old South Carolina woman was fatally shot by her father before he injured his wife and subsequently took his own life. The deceased shooter, identified as Arthur Brannon, locked himself and his daughter at their home on Sunday before shooting her, the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office said, according to PEOPLE.
The deceased woman was identified as MiAysha Brannon. Deputies who responded to the scene found Brannon’s wife – identified as Laquanda Brannon – outside the residence with a gunshot wound to her right arm. The injured woman told authorities she got into a verbal altercation with her husband before he shot her and locked her out of their house.
Brannon’s wife was subsequently taken to a hospital where she was still admitted at the time of this report.
During the fatal incident, hostage negotiators were called to the family’s home to talk to Arthur Brannon. But authorities ended up finding the bodies of the deceased shooter and his daughter after a SWAT team entered the home. That was after efforts to talk to the man proved futile.
MiAysha was a student at Georgia’s Fort Valley State University. And following the shooting, the university released a statement saying the 23-year-old had a promising future, per PEOPLE.
“The death of MiAysha Brannon is devastating news,” the university’s president, Paul Jones, said. “She was a cherished member of our Wildcat family. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this very sad time.”
A GoFundMe has since been set up to help raise funds to support Laquanda.
