The hip-hop community lost and mourned DMX’s death over a year ago. And though the legendary rapper’s tragic demise and subsequent funeral made national headlines, Stacey Dash revealed she recently got to know about his passing.
According to PEOPLE, a video of Dash tearfully paying tribute to the deceased rapper was shared on a TikTok account that seemed to belong to her. In the video, the 55-year-old actress revealed she didn’t know DMX died over a year ago.
“I’m ashamed,” she said while crying. “I didn’t know…. DMX died, I didn’t know—from a cocaine overdose.”
Dash added: “I am today six years and one month clean. It breaks my heart, it breaks my heart, he lost to it, he lost, he lost to that demon of addiction please, please don’t lose.”
Dash also shared the video on her supposed Instagram account and explained how she got to know about the Slippin’ rapper’s passing in the caption.
“I was strolling through #tiktok and found a #DMX song that has saved me many times,” she wrote. “Suddenly it says #RIP i know I am late, i did not know he passed away, he #OD I am heartbroken – he was such a great guy.”
DMX, 50, passed away on April 9 last year after suffering a heart attack from a drug overdose. The award-winning and multi-platinum-selling rapper had been admitted to a hospital for a week before he gave up the ghost.
In his music, DMX had been very open about the traumas he experienced during childhood and his unabated drug addiction struggles. In 2020, the Lord Give Me a Sign rapper also opened up about unwillingly smoking crack when he was 14 years old after his former mentor passed it to him without disclosing what he had laced it with.
In October last year, Dash also spoke about her past issues with addiction in an interview on The Dr. Oz Show. The Clueless actress, who was five years sober at the time, told Dr. Oz that she was consuming between 18 and 20 Vicodin pills daily at a certain period, PEOPLE reported.
“I’m not blaming doctors at all because it was my choice to take more, you know?” she told Dr. Oz. “It was my choice to take that extra one even though I wasn’t in pain. I chose to do that because the Vicodin filled that hole inside of me.”
The 55-year-old added: “It filled that anger. It calmed that anger down. It slowed my brain down. It gave me the ease so that I could deal with life. That’s how I became addicted. It’s no one’s fault but my own.”
And when Dr. Oz responded saying taking that quantity of Vicodin pills each day was expensive, Dash replied saying, “I lost everything.”
