Future Hall of Famer Steph Curry will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the NBA’s greatest sharpshooters. And though the Golden State Warriors superstar also makes shots from inside the arch, one thing he barely does is dunk.
On Saturday, however, the 36-year-old did the unconventional and surprisingly dunked during their game against the Philadelphia 76ers. Per CNN, that was Curry’s first dunk in six years. But following the game, the four-time NBA champion said that was probably the final career dunk.
“That will probably be my last dunk,” Curry told reporters. “I’m calling it right now. That was the last one you’re going to see.”
Curry finished Saturday’s game with 29 points and 13 assists, but his contribution was not enough to help the Warriors overcome the 76ers as they lost the game 119-126.
Curry currently holds the record as the NBA’s leading three-point scorer. He has dunked a few times in the past, but a YouTube compilation video of all his dunks does not go beyond six minutes. During the interview, Curry touched on his last dunk.
“Six years ago. At home. Right wing. The right corner. A little back cut. I think it was a pass from KD (Kevin Durant),” Curry recalled. “I was at Oracle. I never dunked at Chase (Center). How about that?
“I’ve been feeling pretty good. I’ve been doing some knee stuff all year. And you want to take advantage of a cherry-pick opportunity,” he added. “It took everything out of me to get up there.”
Curry’s dunk on Saturday drew cheers from his teammates. He also said their assistant coach Jerry Stackhouse had earlier spoken about wanting to see him dunk.
“Ironically, this morning at shooter run, Stackhouse said he wanted to see a dunk,” Curry said. “He hadn’t said that all year and I haven’t heard that in years and it happened tonight which is kind of funny. It was a very random comment this morning.”
