Eyo Festival in Nigeria
The Eyo Festival is one of the oldest and most unique festivals in the Western part of Africa. It all started on 20th February 1854 after the death of a king in Nigeria’s biggest city, Lagos.
The Eyo festival is held to escort the soul of a departed Lagos King or Chief in order to usher in a new one.
The festival is usually held in the heart of the city. The white-clad masquerades represent the spirits of the dead.
For tourists coming into this event, these things are prohibited: motorcycles, Bicycle, Smoking, and Sandals, Suku – hairstyle that is popular among the Yorubas.
