Residents of a suburb in Ghana reacted with shock after a woman who officials claimed had passed away during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage came back home alive.
Per CitiNewsRoom, the woman, identified as Fatima Kassim, returned home days after her family organized her funeral. Her passing in Saudi Arabia was initially confirmed by Ghana’s consulate, and officials even issued her death certificate.
Kassim’s family ultimately went ahead with her funeral in Ghana because of the official confirmation. But on July 2, Kassim surprisingly returned home, causing several people in her neighborhood to run away as they thought she was a ghost.
“I feel happy and sad, because we are still confused about the situation. This is like a wonder,” one of her relatives said.

Alhaji Amadu Sorogho, who is a member of Ghana’s Hajj Taskforce, told the news outlet that Kassim’s reported death was a case of mistaken identity. “We have mistaken identity. The most important thing is that the lady is alive and everything is over,” Sorogho said.
The Director of Administration of the Hajj Taskforce, Alhaji Iddi Sumaila, also said that two women were given medical attention at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, adding that one had a tourist visa while the other was part of Ghana’s official Hajj delegation.
“There were two patients there, one had a tourist visa and the other went with us, but by then their passports were not with them. So we mistakenly gave the one with the tourist passport to this one,” he explained.
“Usually, when it happens, it is the embassy that takes control, so they issued the certificate. So we knew that one was gone and one was on admission mistakenly, we exchanged it,” he added.
