South Africa’s optical telescope

South Africa has built one of the world’s largest optical telescope. In practical terms, the Rainbow Nation now possesses the machine capable of gathering and focusing light to create a magnified image or collecting data for image sensors.

The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) will aid in bird-watching for ornithology, observational astronomy and reconnaissance for security services.
