New Jersey
New Jersey became the second state to sign a similar law, just a month after Delaware. The bill was signed by Governor Phil Murphy, who hoped that it would put an end to child marriages and particularly help young women.
A similar bill was discussed in 2017, but was vetoed by former governor Chris Christie, thus maintaining the previous law which, allowed minors to get married if they were 16 as long as they obtained consent from parents and a judge.
As of 2015, 3600 minors got married in the state between 1995-2015, according to the New Jersey Department of Health.
