Alex Newell and J Harrison Ghee became the first openly non-binary actors to win a Tony Award on Sunday. Newell won Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for their role in the 2022 musical Shucked.

“Thank you for seeing me, Broadway. I should not be up here as a queer nonbinary fat Black lil baby from Massachusetts,” 30-year-old Newell said in their speech, adding that they were grateful to their mother “for loving me unconditionally”.

“To anyone that thinks they can’t do it, I’m going to look you dead in your face [and say] that you can do anything you put your mind to.” Ghee won Best Lead Actor in a Musical following their performance in Some Like It Hot, the adaptation of the classic cross-dressing comedy film.

“For every trans, nonbinary, gender nonconforming human who was ever told you couldn’t be seen, this is for you,” 33-year-old Ghee said amid tears. Both Newell and Ghee chose to compete in the best actor categories rather than best actress.

This year’s awards, which honor excellence in live Broadway theatre, were handed out at the United Palace in Washington Heights. Ahead of the event, there were fears that the Tonys might not be held following a strike by the Writers Guild of America that almost ruined the show. However, the members of the union concluded that they will not picket the event when its producers agreed to have an unscripted ceremony, Variety reported.
